Lonehill Academy is a progressive, contemporary and independent school, which has delivered exceptional education from Early Learning to grade 12 for more than 10 years.
Our holistic learning programs are second to none, led by a team of exceptional educators who challenge and maximise the potential of each and every learner
Lonehill International Academy (LIA) started as a small home school in 2006. Derick and Retha van der Schyf spearheaded this parent initiative to find a suitable alternative to the GDE and IEB curriculums in South Africa. After extensive research the world-renowned Cambridge syllabus was chosen to educate the learners of Lonehill International Academy.
The passion and motivation of the owners and fellow parents and students were instrumental in securing a quick and steady growth in student numbers. The school started out as a Secondary school, offering tuition in the Cambridge curriculum from Check point level, IGCSE and up to AS/A levels. This is equivalent to grade 8 to grade 12 in the local school arena in South Africa. The Cambridge A level curriculum allow students to proceed to grade 13, post matric, which is equivalent to 1 st and 2 nd year University levels.
LIA is registered as a Private Independent School with the Gauteng Department of Education EMIS number JE 700 400 611. It is also registered with Cambridge as an International school, registration number ZA253, which is affiliated with 10500 international schools in 165 countries.
LIA is an endorsed member of the Association of Cambridge Educators in Southern Africa (ACESA)

Values – Integrity, Compassion, Courage, Self-discipline
Cambridge International helps learners develop thinking and learning skills so that they become confident, responsible, reflective, innovative and engaged, ready to tackle the demands of tomorrow’s world and capable of shaping a better world for the future.
Success in Cambridge qualifications often opens doors to the world’s best universities in the USA, the UK, Australia, Canada and beyond.
Advanced skills and preparedness for the best opportunities available to learners after school are what you would expect from an organisation that is part of the world-leading University of Cambridge.
We design Cambridge programs to support the development of learners who are confident, responsible, reflective, innovative and engaged – the attributes of the Cambridge learner.
We recognise that assessment has two important roles: to prove and improve – to prove what students are learning, and to suggest how they can improve their understanding and skills.
It is vital that Cambridge students can be confident that their qualifications will be understood and valued throughout their education and career, in their home country and internationally.
We believe one of the benefits of being a Cambridge school is belonging to a worldwide education community. Nearly a million learners from 10000 schools in 160 countries are currently preparing for their future with our programmes and qualifications.
Cambridge Pathway students have the chance to acquire the knowledge and skills they need to achieve at school, university and beyond.
The four stages lead seamlessly from primary to secondary and pre-university years. Each stage
– Cambridge Primary, Cambridge Lower Secondary, Cambridge Upper Secondary and Cambridge Advanced – builds on the learners’ development from the previous one, but can also be offered separately. Similarly, each syllabus adopts a ‘spiral’ approach, building on previous learning to help advance students study. Our curriculum reflects the latest thinking in each subject area, drawn from expert international research and consultation with schools.
